John Gallup of California USA has recently upgraded his Rega Turntable with acrylic plinth and bronze bearing hub. Here's his feedback and beautiful pictures of his new TT :

Michael,

The plinth, bearing and braces arrived today in good order. I was pleased to find that you had already assembled almost everything, which made the installation a snap, requiring only a few screwdrivers. Everything lined up properly and fit well. I'm already using your motor base, adjustable feet, and motor pulley.

I put on a record I always play after I've modified the system ("Selections from the Gutter," by Art Hodes, Storyville SLP 4057) and was delighted to hear stronger bass and less wow and flutter. I'm not sure why this should be the case but it is very enjoyable. Your plinth is of course heavier than the stock Rega RP-3, and as I understand it Rega's philosophy is to make the plinth as light as possible. Whatever the reason, your plinth and bearing work well and I'm very glad to add them to my system.

Some photos are attached.

As always, it's a pleasure doing business with you.

Regards,
John Gallup

 Thanks John!

Sean's DIY project .....

Sean of California has just completed his new DIY TT project.

Beautiful, isn't it?

It's almost a completely new TT now with all the upgrades:
- stainless steel dual pulley
- aluminium sub-platter
- acrylic platter
- bronze bearing hub
- tonearm stabilizer
- motor isolation base
- acrylic isolation platform
- braced acrylic plinth and Audiomods tonearm.

Here's Sean's feedback :

Hi Michael.

I was finally able to get the table together. I was waiting on the custom arm. Everything worked except the VTA adjuster but that's going on my other table. Audiomods included their VTA system for free.

It looks great and sounds fantastic. The "Rega sound" is still there but it's much more like an P9 and P10 than a P3 due to the massive improvement in accuracy and dynamics. Also that instant start up is quite amazing and speed is spot-on.

Thanks again!

Sean

Thanks Sean!

Today I am going to tweak the main bearing hub of my Rega turntable. Look, I have a bronze bearing hub here for testing!

And why bronze?

Bronze is one of the best materials for bearing due to its toughness, strength and low coefficient of friction. Low coefficient of friction would mean easier start-up, smoother running and less vibration/noise generated from the bearing hub. Besides, there's another very important feature we shall not forget, i.e. good lubricity which enables it to run with very little lubrication. Hence, it can still continue running without re-lubrication over a long period of time. So even if there's negligence on our part, damages to the sub-platter steel shaft would be minimum.

Of course, it's always important to let our bearing run with adequate lubrication for optimal performance.
